I collaborated with photographer Christos Karantzolas to help create his new visually driven experimental fashion magazine Rizoma. We are exploring the possibilities of organizing visual thoughts without any expectation of context. Of course design needs structure, but the structure doesn’t always have to follow expected patterns. A building needs walls that fit together, but the walls can also obscure their utility. When eyeballs start following a pattern, a glaze sets in, the swiping and scrolling becomes a blurry river of imagery. Continually break the pattern and the eyes keep adjusting. Maybe they even start paying attention again. For a more poetic version, here’s a quote from the Rizoma website: “Possibilities of viewing life experiences through bodily imaginaries. Chartography by attractions and influences, melting chronology and organization. A nomadic system of growth and propagation”
